Consultation on the UK Plan for Rare Diseases

The Department of Health in England has launched a consultation document on behalf of the 4 UK Health Departments.

The consultation is on the UK Plan for Rare Diseases.  It has been produced jointly by the four nations of the UK and sets out a coherent and joined up approach to tackling rare diseases. This will be the first time that the UK has ever developed a plan on tackling rare disease and the consultation brings together a number of recommendations designed to improve coordination of care and lead to better outcomes for people with rare diseases.

The consultation documents and consultation response form can be accessed from the Department of Health’s website below:

Public Consultation on Application to become NHS Foundation Trust
View Monday 05/03/2012 marked the first day of a 12 week formal consultation being conducted by Solent NHS Trust about their application to become a Foundation Trust. The consultation will run between 5 March 2012 and 28 May 2012 and will provide the opportunity for the Trust to understand what the people who use their services (patients, members of the public, partners and other stakeholders) think about the proposals. Solent NHS Trust provides the services which commissioners decide to purchase.

The consultation covers three broad areas including: the vision and future plans of the Trust; the membership and the Council of Governors.

Your views on the work of the Trust matter and Dr Ros Tolcher, the Chief Executive of the Trust, would like to personally invite you to provide feedback as part of this consultation. The consultation document explains the benefits of becoming an NHS Foundation Trust, the plans for the next five years and the governance and membership proposals.

You can share your thoughts with Dr Tolcher via email, letter or through a phone call. Alternatively, if you would like to meet with Dr Tolcher in person, please contact, Vicky Boland on 023 8060 8819.

Terry Carter, Acting Chair of Portsmouth LINk, encourages all LINk members to consider applying to become a member of the Trust (membership is open to all) and to support the Trust in their application to become a Foundation Trust.

Avastin Consultation
NHS Portsmouth is seeking views on a proposal that will be discussed by the SHIP PCT Cluster Board at the end of the month that seeks to make Avastin the preferred drug for the treatment of an eye condition known as Wet Age Related Macular Degeneration. Currently a more expensive drug, Lucentis, is used. The following Letter and briefing document explains the implications of this. View Letter from Dr Stuart Ward; View Briefing Document.

Any Qualified Provider
The term AQP stands for 'Any Qualified Provider' and is a national initiative in response to feedback on the NHS reforms that seeks to extend the choices of service providers available to patients for a range of community services. For instance there may be times when people may prefer not to go to hospital for a particular treatment but to, say, a high street provider instead. This engagement exercise seeks to ask people what they think about the services they propose and which they feel would be the most important. View Letter from Keith Douglas; View PDF Presentation.
