Vascular Surgery Seminar hosted by
Hampshire County Council at Elizabeth 11 Court West, Winchester on Monday 11th
June, 2012
This event
was attended by Chairs of Hosps, Link Chairs and Provider representatives.
Opening
speeches were given by, Debbie Fleming , C.E.O. Ship, Sarah Elliott, Director
of Nursing, Ship, Mr James Palmer, Medical Director South West Specialised
Commissioning and Mr Jonathan Earnshaw, Consultant Vascular Surgeon/Clinical
Director of the National AAA Programme
Mr Earnshaw
said that ‘outcomes’ in relation to vascular surgery are relevant, but only over
a sufficient period of time. What
matters are:- a) Adequate Numbers of Operations b) Adequate numbers of surgeons
and c) Adequate facilities.
There is a
correlation between these factors and mortality rates of which the public need
to be made aware.
The Vascular
Society has set out standards. There needs to be changes as to how vascular
surgery is delivered nationally and a will to bring this about.
What is
being proposed nationally is a networking system with Centres of Excellence at
the core in different areas/regions.
Ship reemphasised
that they are looking for a networking system between Southampton and
Portsmouth.
The
Commissioners present, emphasised that the funding will
reflect the changes that are coming about.
Numbers and
outcomes will continue to be monitored.
